About this data
When do alpine passes typically open?
It varies by altitude and winter snowfall, but a useful rule of thumb: low passes (below ~2,000m) reopen from mid-April to early May. Mid-altitude classics like the Furka, Grimsel and Susten usually open in early to mid-June. High-altitude passes like the Stelvio, Timmelsjoch and Grossglockner open late May to early June and close again in late October or early November. Year-round passes — Julier, Maloja and the San Bernardino tunnel route — stay driveable through winter with snow chains on demand.
How accurate is this data?
We combine four official sources — TCS (Switzerland), ÖAMTC (Austria), CCISS Viaggiare Informati (Italy) and BayernInfo / ADAC (Germany) — and reconcile them against community reports from drivers using the road that day. Official entries are tagged 'Official' and are our most reliable signal. Editorial entries are hand-set by the Swissotic team when an official source is temporarily unavailable. Always double-check current conditions before heading out — snow falls, landslides happen, and one-hour weather swings close passes that opened that morning.
Why is a pass showing 'unknown'?
'Unknown' means we have no confirmed signal from an official source in the last 72 hours. This is common during shoulder seasons (April–May and October–November) when regional authorities update their feeds irregularly. If a pass you need is showing 'unknown', check the individual road page — it will usually have a direct link to the official status page and any recent community report.
