The Timmelsjoch at 2,474m crosses the Austrian-Italian border between the Ötztal and Passeier valleys. The Austrian side is a modern toll road — smooth, wide, tunnelled in places. The Italian side is the opposite: narrow, unguarded, and raw. That contrast is half the appeal. Surface quality drops sharply after the border. Lowered cars should avoid the Italian side entirely. The motorcycle museum at the top is worth a look even if you're in a car. Open June to October. Toll is around €16 for a car. Best combined with a run through the Ötztal from Innsbruck.
The Timmelsjoch is open year-round, though conditions vary with the seasons. Check the current status panel before heading out.
The Timmelsjoch is 35 km long. At a steady mountain pace, expect roughly 35 minutes behind the wheel — plus photo stops.
Caution is needed. The surface is fair, with steep gradients and narrow sections that can cause scraping on lowered cars. Drive the Timmelsjoch with care.
Yes, a toll is collected on the Timmelsjoch. Rates vary by vehicle and season — check the official source before travelling.
Early morning is unbeatable on the Timmelsjoch. Tourist coaches, cyclists and slow-moving caravans build up from mid-morning; first light also gives the cleanest photos. If you can only go in the afternoon, aim for after 17:00 when traffic thins again.
