The Splügen at 2,113m crosses from Graubünden into Italy through some of the tightest hairpins on any Swiss pass. The south side — the Italian Strada dello Spluga — is the star: narrow, dramatic, and cut into cliff faces with unguarded drops. Not for the faint-hearted or the wide-bodied. The Swiss north side from Splügen village is wider and well-maintained. Surface quality is mixed: good on the Swiss side, rougher once you cross into Italy. Drive north-to-south for the dramatic Italian descent. Rarely congested. One of the best-kept secrets in the Alps.
The Splügen Pass is open year-round, though conditions vary with the seasons. Check the current status panel before heading out.
The Splügen Pass is 30 km long. At a steady mountain pace, expect roughly 30 minutes behind the wheel — plus photo stops.
Caution is needed. The surface is fair, with steep gradients and narrow sections that can cause scraping on lowered cars. Drive the Splügen Pass with care.
No toll is required for the Splügen Pass. A valid motorway vignette may still apply on the roads you use to reach it.
Early morning is unbeatable on the Splügen Pass. Tourist coaches, cyclists and slow-moving caravans build up from mid-morning; first light also gives the cleanest photos. If you can only go in the afternoon, aim for after 17:00 when traffic thins again.
